The city's harshest critic collapses at the opening night toast. His glass was poisoned. Who handed it to him?
The case
The Meridian Gallery has spent a year preparing tonight's opening, and everyone who matters in the art world has come. Harold Finch, the most feared critic in the city, is there too. A single paragraph from Finch can make a painter's name or end a gallery, and he has never been kind about it.
The star of the show is the Whitcombe Madonna, a lost Renaissance panel, recently restored and bought for a fortune by the patron Mrs. Whitcombe. At a quarter past nine the gallery owner raised her glass for the toast. At twenty past, Harold Finch dropped his own glass and collapsed. The doctor says he was poisoned. The glass held only sparkling water, and Finch never drank anything else.
The doors are locked and the police are on their way. Four people were close to Finch tonight, and each of them had a reason to be glad he could no longer write.
