The lamp went dark, the keeper is dead, and a storm has cut the island off. Who put out the light?
The case
Greywater Light stands on a bare rock a mile off the coast, joined to the shore by a causeway that the sea swallows twice a day. Silas Marsh has kept its lamp for thirty-one years, and in all that time it has never once failed. Tonight a storm is hammering the island, and four people are sheltering in the keeper's house: his old friend Captain Rowe, his housekeeper Mrs. Pike, a young woman called Nell Carrow who rows out the weekly supplies, and Mr. Dunmore, the harbour inspector, who came to check the station's books.
At half past nine the great lamp went dark. A supply ship out in the channel only just turned in time. At twenty to ten Silas Marsh was found at the foot of the tower stairs, his neck broken and the lamp's clockwork stopped by hand. The tide has closed the causeway. Nobody can leave the island until morning, and one of the four people in the keeper's kitchen is a killer.
