Case file No. 002

The Midnight Express

A jewel dealer is dead in his sleeper compartment. The train stopped for ten minutes. Who used them?

The case

The Northern Star Express is the last night train from the coast, famous for its velvet compartments and its very discreet passengers. Tonight in first class travels Alistair Voss, a jewel dealer who never carries less than a fortune. In his locked case: the Blue Heron, a rare sapphire he was taking to a buyer in the capital, and a certificate that was supposed to prove it was genuine.

Four people in the first-class cars had a reason to be near him: his anxious assistant, a celebrated opera singer who shared cocoa with him, an archaeologist who was to examine the stone, and the conductor, who holds a key to every door. At ten past midnight the train braked hard and stopped at a red signal in the middle of nowhere. For ten minutes the whole train was silent.

At 12:40 AM the conductor opened compartment seven. Alistair Voss lay on the floor, his watch smashed, his case empty. The Blue Heron was gone. The next station is an hour away, and the killer is still on board.
