About this quiz
Detectives learn to look for small leaks in a performance: the sentence that is slightly too long, the joke that arrives too fast, the stillness that is a little too perfect, the hand that cannot keep still. Most of us have one signature leak, and it appears whenever we try to seem more confident, calmer or different than we really are.
In this quiz you are placed in fifteen situations where you are bluffing, concealing a feeling or managing an impression. Your answers reveal your most likely tell, and what it says about your relationship with honesty and being seen.
Having a tell is not a flaw. It is proof that you are not very good at pretending, which is a perfectly decent quality to have.
What this quiz measures
Even good actors leak. When people pretend, they usually give themselves away through one reliable habit: explaining too much, joking too much, going stiff or fidgeting. This quiz asks how you behave when you are hiding a feeling or bluffing, and shows which tell is yours.
How to read your result
Detectives are trained to look for exactly these behaviours, and so are close friends. Your result describes the tell you are most likely to show, the situations in which it appears and what it communicates to the people around you.
The 4 possible results
- The Over-Explainer: Too many details give you away. When you are pretending, you talk more. You add context, backstory and reasons nobody asked for, because silence feels like a trap.
- The Joker: Humour is your emergency exit. When you are uncomfortable, you get funnier. You deflect with a joke, change the mood and steer away from the real topic with a smile.
- The Statue: You go perfectly still and perfectly polite. When you are pretending, you freeze your face and tone. You become calm, controlled and very slightly too smooth.
- The Fidgeter: Your body tells the truth for you. When you are pretending, your body leaks. You touch your hair, shift your weight, look away or laugh a little too loudly, because honesty lives in your hands.
Tips for using your result
If you want to hide less, do not suppress your tell, because that usually makes it stronger. Name the feeling to yourself first. Once you know what you are hiding, the habit tends to quieten on its own.
